My Journey in Hockey: From Player to Coach

In October 1988, I attended my first live hockey game in Cardiff, and from that moment, something clicked. I knew I had to learn to skate and start playing right away. My junior hockey journey began shortly after, but I could never have imagined the incredible path it would lead me on over the next three decades. The memories from those years are some of my most cherished, and the friendships I formed with teammates remain among my closest to this day. Watching the Cardiff Devils win championships, I dreamed of one day achieving the same success with my hometown team. Although I didn’t step into becoming a professional player, my time in junior hockey was still deeply rewarding, and I’m grateful for the coaches who inspired me and ignited my passion for coaching.

While at university, I made the decision to focus solely on coaching rather than progressing my playing career. Coaching had become something I had been considering since my last years as a Junior, and I felt I could really get involved at junior level and help make a difference. So, coaching began in my early 20s, and it quickly became a true passion. My coaching journey began with Cardiff Juniors, where I eventually became head coach, and then I joined the Devils organization full-time in 2012. By 2014, when the team was taken over, I dedicated myself exclusively to coaching the senior team, marking the start of my professional coaching career.

Working alongside Cardiff Devils Head Coach Andrew Lord, I honed my skills as a video coach, breaking down live games and analysing team strategies, structures, and habits. A year later, I was offered an assistant coach position, which I held until my departure. During this period I was fortunate to be part of a unforgettable period where we won two Elite League titles, one playoff championship, and two Challenge Cups, along with making appearances in the Champions Hockey League. These years were unbelievable memories, but more importantly such a great learning environment for me as a coach and person.  It taught me a lot about the game, attention to detail, and how important team culture is to success.

In 2018, I took the opportunity to work with Okanagan Hockey Academy, where I focused on developing elite junior players—something I had always thrived doing. The experience reinforced my love for working with young athletes, helping them realize their potential, and making a real difference in their development. It was during this time that I started to seriously consider creating my own venture in hockey development, to offer players, coaches, and clubs across the UK more opportunities for growth and support.

Coaching has always felt like a natural fit for me. I’m driven by a passion for teaching the game and helping players achieve their goals. I enjoy the process of building strong, trusting relationships with players and their families, as these connections are fundamental to fostering their growth. My communication skills have developed over the years, and I feel I’m able to help players understand the game and details required, whether it's in training, meetings, or game situations. Attention to detail has become something at the very heart of everything I try and do.  And its critical when developing players and teams to have this approach.

Now, with over 20 years of coaching experience and more than 800 games coached across various levels—ranging from juniors to the Elite League and Champions Hockey League—I can confidently say that coaching is not just a career for me; it’s a way of life.

In April 2024, I took the leap to create my own venture, Precision Hockey UK—a project I had been contemplating for years. My goal was to build a coaching environment that reflected the way I would have wanted to learn as a player, and that I wish had been available when I first started coaching. Precision Hockey UK is grounded in my passion for the game and my commitment to developing players, coaches, and clubs, particularly focusing on helping UK players advance in the sport.

It’s been an exciting journey so far, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved in our first year. I look forward to continuing to support the growth of our players and clubs.
